Back 40 Bourbon begins with a rare and storied grain, the legendary Jimmy Red Corn.

Once nearly extinct, this deep burgundy heirloom was rescued by a single seed saver who recognized its incredible flavor and high sugar content—perfect for making exceptional bourbon.

Inspired by the Southern bootleggers who once crafted moonshine from this remarkable corn, our family set out to grow Jimmy Red and create a bourbon that honors its rich legacy. We carefully cultivate each crop and distill in small batches, ensuring every sip reflects the passion and care behind preserving this time-honored grain.

Our Story

The Corn That Changed Bourbon

Before there was a bottle, there was a seed—nearly lost to time, tucked into two surviving ears of deep red corn. Jimmy Red is no ordinary grain. It’s a Southern heirloom with a bootlegger’s past, a farmer’s devotion, and a flavor that changed everything.

At Back 40, this corn is the soul of our bourbon. Grown with intention, far from the crowd, Jimmy Red stands tall—literally. Its 15-foot stalks and rich, nutty flavor set it apart from anything in the field or on the shelf.

Our Corn

We don’t just make bourbon. We craft history in a bottle, using one of the rarest and richest heirloom corns to ever touch a still.
